Jamie Johnson

The title of the series is 1-0. I thought about this in a sporting context, about how it represents both agony and ecstasy, whilst remaining somewhat coded as there’s nothing to explicitly decode its context.

I used found photos that contain a source of potency in this body of work; they were sourced online from American sports crowds, mining strikes and Hillsborough, amongst other events. My justification was that, by removing context from the source imagery, it will be capable of telling a narrative of a nonexistent event, subverting the viewer from the truth of each image and alluring them with the form of the crowd and the patterns they create. Without completing the necessary information required to understand a photograph, the scene of a miners’ march could be interpreted as a group of rowdy fans walking to a stadium when positioned alongside works of a similar aesthetic.
